Happiness is…The Berwick Street Cloth House

And so begins a new series of posts for this little blog of mine. Now safely back in Australia and rediscovering the comforts of home, I’ve been thinking a lot of about oft-called ‘happy places’ – you know, those spots, people or things that inspire and calm. So, in between ranting about colour cravings and world wanderings, I thought I’d occasionally share a few of my favourite escapes, near and far.

I decided to kick us off with one of my frequent London haunts – The Cloth House on Berwick Street. This little alley off Oxford Street is home to London’s most famous fabric stores, many frequented by fashion students, designers and costume makers alike. It’s also home to one of London’s best coffee spots, Flat White, but that’s a whole other post.

The Cloth House

Discovered early on in my London adventures when trying to escape the Oxford Street mayhem (and stop myself buying yet another Zara blazer), The Cloth House was like a candy store for this colour-obsessed kid. Filled to the vintage-shabby-chic brim with fabrics of every colour, pattern and weave, a visit to The Cloth House inevitably ended with a few small purchases but a lot of big ideas. I think that’s what I love most about fabric stores – the air of endless creative possibility. The fabrics themselves are beautiful but they’ll be used to create any number of wonderful things.

Isn’t it gorgeous?!? Just looking at these photos makes me want to crack out the sewing kit… Sewing sesh anyone?

Yours in fabric fan-dom,

xx

Colour me happy: mellow mint

Pastels have been making their sorbet-soaked presence felt since the northern hemisphere spring but lucky for those of us enamored with these subtly stupendous hues, it looks like they’ll be hanging around for a while yet.

Top of my list of pastel passions is the sweet, calming and ever-adaptable mint. I picked up a pair of cropped jeans in this delightful shade during my last round of London shopping (Zara, H&M, Cos – I’m missing you already. We’ll be together again some day…) and I’m afraid I’m a little bit obsessed. Were it not frowned upon by fashion aficionados and my mother, I think I’d be wearing them every day. So while these minty favs are in the wash (hurry up and dry, dammit!) I’ll just have to amuse myself by posting some colour love instead…

Mint. iPhone. Pantone. Three great loves in one small item. Sigh…

This adorable Diana F+ camera comes in a colour known as ‘Neptune Green’. How divine is that name…!?!

Anthropologie do it again with this AMAZING mint and green watch. Keeps me on time AND looks stunning…

Mint on mint. Kinda love it…

Arguably every girl’s favourite mint…

All this talk of mint has me craving mojitos and choc chip ice cream. I’m off to explore…!

Yours in colour love,

London love: farewell dear friend

And so my friends the time has come to say goodbye to London. I sit here with my overstuffed luggage and much-stamped passport, ready to make the last long journey home to Australia.

I feel so grateful for the perspective, freedom and much-expanded wardrobe this year has granted me. I’ve been lucky to share so many adventures, big and small, with new friends discovered and old friends cherished. This has been a time of memory making,  limit testing and generally having a blast. Thank you to those who housed me, fed and watered (or rather, wine and coffee-ed) me, and to those who shared the giggles, good times and more-than-occasional tears.

So London, here’s to you. It’s been swell…

It’s surreal and a little sad to be closing a chapter of my life that was so long awaited and planned but I have no doubt that many more great adventures await.

Until next time…

Farm fresh San Francisco

Greetings my friends! Long time no blog, I know. Recent travel and fun times, while providing plenty of blog-worthy material, have allowed little time to actually post. Now back on solid ground (may my next low cost airline flight be in the very distant future…), it’s finally back to a little bit of oui.non.maybe.

While there are plenty of new international escapades to share, I realise I have yet to finish gushing about glorious San Fran. It’s a city that loves its food, the fresher the better. And there’s no better place to find fresh food in SF than at the famous Ferry Building Farmers Market. I’ve already written a little about it in my earlier post but couldn’t resist sharing a few of the snaps we took on the deliciously sunny morning we spent eating our way through some of the best produce from the city and surrounds. Bon appetit!

Adorably named and deliciously yellow finger lemons

Mushrooms! Mushrooms! (But no badgers or snakes*)

Touching beans – dunking your hands straight in was not just allowed but encouraged. One of life’s little pleasures…

Leeks, leeks, leeks…

Some of the best caw-fee we had in San Fran…

Delightfully delicious pecan pie. Yum!

Love the colour of these peppers. And could the farm name be any cuter? Happy Quail – adorbs!

A little seaside music to accompany our eating…

As if all the fabulous restaurants and food markets weren’t enough, San Francisco also has an incredible street food scene with food trucks serving a huge range of delicious eats all over the city. They even organise a ‘roaming food extravaganza’ (yum!) each day with groups of trucks serving breakfast, lunch and dinner in every corner of the city. You can check out the market locations at Off the Grid or track down your favourite food truck using this great site.

I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. What I’d give for a slice of that pecan pie…

Yours in food envy,

xx

Lost: heart. Last seen: San Francisco.

Adventuring half way around the world comes, inevitably, with occasional (and occasionally overwhelming) doses of homesickness.  So what do you do when the cravings for home and loved ones gets a bit much? Meet a friend from home at a halfway point, of course. As you do.

That’s how I found myself in San Francisco last December for a week of exploring, eating and generally having a blast. San Fran seems to spark endless adoration from everyone who visits and I have certainly joined the ranks of those gushing about how wonderful the city is. I can’t quite pinpoint what it is that I love so much about San Fran. Perhaps it was the glorious weather (it was the warmest December week in the city’s history!),  the eclectic architecture, mind-blowing food or the chilled out, all-welcoming charm. Whatever it is, San Francisco had me from hello and I definitely didn’t want to say goodbye.

Rather than take the usual tourist routes, we spent most of the week just wandering around the city, discovering one amazing neighbourhood after another and taking advice from friends and locals on the best spots to see, sit, drink and, most importantly, eat. And by golly, there were some incredible places to eat!

I could continue prattling for pages about our adventures but instead, here are a few of my favourite snaps from the trip (Instagram of course!)…

P.S. Thinking of heading to San Fran? Do it! And if you do…
- Cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge, but make sure to pick a day without gale force winds…
- Take a night tour of Alcatraz. Believe me, it’s worth it just for the sunset ferry ride.
- For amazing local food, check out the Ferry Building. This glorious 19th century building used to be a major transport hub for the city when ferries were the main means of travel. It is now a ‘people’s marketplace’ showcasing local produce and products. The best time to go is on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday morning when the Farmers’ Market spills out into the surrounding streets. Make sure you take an empty stomach and your camera!
- Check out some of our favourite eating spots – Farmer Brown (real southern food in a cool and brooding space. Drinks are served in Mason jars – need I say more?), Mamacita (delicious Mexican food and equally delicious wait staff), Dottie’s True Blue Cafe (nothing to do with Australia but everything to do with an old-style diner and mind-blowingly good breakfasts), The Grove on Fillmore (more delicious brunch!) and Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers (the best burgers you’ll EVER have).
- Visit The Pirate Store (San Francisco’s ONLY independent pirate supply store), part of the amazing 826 Valencia children’s literacy initiative. Pick up a glass eye, some ‘Scurvy Begone’ or some mermaid bait and try to avoid getting caught stealing treasure…
- Walk. Just explore. North Beach, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Castro, Mission District, Nob Hill, the Haight, China Town – each neighbourhood has its own distinct identity just waiting to be discovered. Take some good walking shoes and tackle some of the San Fran hills – it makes for a great workout (to work off all the fabulous food!).

Home sweet home

After almost a year of overseas work and travel, I’m home for a quick visit to recharge my batteries, plot next steps and get a good dose of Mum’s cooking. It’s been a whirlwind month of catch ups, cocktails and cups of tea with a few seaside sojourns added to help boost my London-depleted Vitamin D levels.

Brisbane has been doing its very best to seduce me, putting on a daily show of skin-warming sunshine and impossibly blue skies. And by golly I think it’s working…
It’s been an absolute delight indulging in all the things I’ve missed so much (Driving! Tim Tams! Milo! Sun!), many of which I never fully appreciated before. Nothing like absence for making the heart grow fonder.

As I prepare to jump on a plane and jet off again for another round of international hijinks (this time with the irrepressible Ms N – Europe, you’ve been warned!), I thought I’d share some of my favourite home-holiday snaps. I can’t wait to be back to snap some more…

Colour me happy: marvellously mellow yellow

I’ve had a colour stuck in my head all week. Like a catchy tune (not of the Rebecca Black variety) it keeps popping up in unexpected places and quite literally brightening my day. If I didn’t know better (and if I didn’t so enjoy its company), I’d think yellow was stalking me…

Here are few snaps of the very happy hue that has been my unexpected companion. Enjoy… x
